Old Testament Survey: The Message, Form, and Background of the Old Testament Review

I am a lay person and was looking for more information about the OT. My brother, an ordained Methodist minister, recommended this to me. It has good information and is laid out well, but some of the theology is over my head. I am using it more for reference as I read and would buy it again.

Summer of the Midnight Sun (Alaskan Quest #1)

Summer of the Midnight Sun (Alaskan Quest #1) Review

516mIde%2BSRL. SL160 Summer of the Midnight Sun (Alaskan Quest #1)
First of all, I did really enjoy this book, and whipped through it fairly quickly. The book has a fair bit of action to it. The basic plot is that two siblings are living in Alaska, their old friend shows up, the girl and him have a bit of romance going on (completely PG), but this old friend is, unknown to them, thought to be a criminal. So this woman goes up to Alaska to capture him. Okay, that’s the basic plot, pretty interesting and action packed. I liked the lowkey romance parts too. What I wasn’t prepared for, that hardly any of the reviews mention is that the author whacks you over the head with Christianity. Every character that is even mentioned in passing has a description of their religious views. Characters who aren’t firm believers are seen as having a less clear path in life than those who are. Perhaps this shock was because I haven’t read much Christian fiction and I wasn’t expecting it. I did find parts of it interesting when they dealt with people questioning God, but felt that future readers should be more prepared for this element of the book, since the Christian message makes up a large part of the book and explains everyone’s actions. The book does leave you off at a bit of a cliffhanger, which is understandable for a series book, but I was still disappointed because unlike many other series books, this book didn’t seem to even complete the story. The book ended before the story within the bigger story had been finished. Dissapointing, to say the least.

Enjoying Where You Are On the Way to Where You Are Going: Learning How to Live a Joyful, Spirit-Led Life

Enjoying Where You Are On the Way to Where You Are Going: Learning How to Live a Joyful, Spirit-Led Life Review

JOYce Meyer is keen on spreading the news that God wants you to ENJOY your life, whether you’re in the middle of great delight or great distress. Pulling from Biblical truth, she proves her point in her easy- to-read way of teaching. In recent weeks, I have read many of her books, and many times the informations overlaps but that’s ok because, oftentimes, one has to hear/read the info over and over for it to sink in. I suffer from anxiety, depression and “grumbliness” (complaining) and she explains that joy (spiritual happiness in knowing we are saved even though we don’t deserve it) can be had no matter the circumstances, whether we’re in a state of bliss or battle. The first is easy, the second (when in a trial) we have to realize that, for the believer, the trial is for a purpose and for our good (see Romans), and that “it, too, will pass”. Enjoying life is a choice, but it (joy) is also a spiritual gift from God to those that obey and trust (have confidence in and depend on Him). Choose joy! Choose life! Choose to read this book, to enlighten you and to help you choose to enjoy your life! The title says it all.

Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity

Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity Review

Lauren Winner, author of Girl Meets God: A Memoir and recently, Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Disciplines (Pocket Classics), put out a book in 2005 titled, Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity. And that’s exactly what Winner designs to do: talk about sex in a realistic fashion, from a biblical worldview, that allows us to get past various myths about sex, including the highly eroticized and romanticized beliefs on sex we frequently absorb from both the world and the church.
